The paper considers the actual wind distribution available for ships equipped with a traction kite as an auxiliary means of propulsion on various routes. It also investigates the practical
and legal effects kite propulsio may have. Finally it states that auxiliary kite propulsion cannot achieve a reasonable commercial return on its investment, because various factors restrict its
use. These factors are addressed.
